SMEAD CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF BEING "GREEN"
Every Smead Branded Product Contains Post-Consumer Recycled Material
HASTINGS, Minn. (April 9, 2009) — For more than two decades, Smead has been diverting paper from landfills and reusing it to manufacture filing products in an effort to do its part to protect the environment. The provider of filing and organizational products offers hundreds of products made from 100 percent recycled materials.
"For Smead, keeping the world organized also means keeping the world sustainable," said Sharon Avent, President and CEO of Smead. "It has always been important to us to make good business decisions when it comes to developing and offering innovative products, and that includes being responsible for the well-being of future generations."
Smead employs a variety of methods to lessen its carbon footprint including developing a line of 100 percent recycled products that include top tab and hanging folder products as well as jackets, pockets, expanding files and wallets. In addition, more than 75 percent of Smead’s packaging and shipping cartons contain recycled material.
Smead also is a certified member of the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) Certified Sourcing Program, which guarantees that the paper used to make Smead products comes from forests that are grown and harvested in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Smead’s participation in the SFI program is part of its environmental stewardship initiative, which started in 1989 with the introduction of post-consumer waste into its paper products and has evolved over the past 20 years to include numerous internal initiatives to reduce, reuse and recycle in every aspect of its business.
"We have been 'green' for a long time and we continue to find ways to enhance our methods," Avent said.
